So I made new ones with more clear action. It was so obvious after her comment but I didn’t realize it while I drew sketches. Very interesting.įirst I did a bunch of quick thumbnail sketches and sent it to the art director.Īrt director, Dawn Murin, pointed out that it looks like the mage was getting hit by the lightning instead of firing it out. The mage focuses the lightnings from the nodes into one huge lightning bolt. Tell us about your process for painting this piece.ĭmitry: The task was to depict an Izzet mage standing in the middle of the array of electrical coils or nodes. So you never know.ĭaniel: Let’s talk about one of your current pieces for Ravnica Allegiance - Electrodominance. I thought that I love dark grim worlds only, like Innistrad for example, but I worked on the Unstable whimsical set and had so much pleasure drawing these cards.

And you never know what you’ll like the most. It’s easy to get involved to any setting, most of it because every world is described with so many details, so many interesting features, conflicts. Before that, and still, I’m working on another Wizard of the Coast card game Duel Masters.ĭaniel: For those of us who love your work, where can we find more of your artwork (outside of your Magic pieces)?ĭmitry: You can visit my website - there you can find links on my gallery and even a special page for the MtG collectors.ĭaniel: Is there one Magic world or character that if given the chance you’d love to paint?ĭmitry: I really love everything Magic can offer to an artist. I’ve worked on MtG illustrations starting from 2016, and I’ve drawn about 35 cards since then. How long have you been doing art for Magic: the Gathering?ĭmitry: Hi Daniel and everybody, thank you for inviting me. Here we have another interview with one of Magic’s best artists: Dmitry Burmak! Enjoy!ĭaniel: Hi Dmitry! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your artistic process with us fans. Thank you Lucas for the behind-the-scenes look at your process! Great work! Once my sketch is approved, I shoot any ref I need and start working on a tighter digital sketch that I’ll then transfer to a primed hardboard for the oil painting. I start, like I start all of my assignments, with rough sketches.(attached) After developing an idea or two, I send those to the AD for revisions or approval. It was a somewhat new challenge, that I had a lot of fun with it. The AD, Dawn Murin, wanted me to play up the graphic quality of the light and dark values you’ll find in a lot of film noir. This was a fun assignment because, the set had a noir vibe to it. L: I got the Dimir Informant assignment about a year back. Tell us about your process for painting this piece. I have yet to paint a Planeswalker, I’d love the opportunity do one of those.ĭ: Let’s talk about one of your current pieces for Guilds of Ravnica - Dimir Informant.

L: I’ve gotten to paint a lot of great characters for MtG.
#VEGA THE WATCHER UPDATE#
You’ll be able to find me on Twitter and FB but I don’t update those nearly as much as I should.ĭ: Are there any worlds or characters that you haven’t been able to paint for Magic that you would love to get a shot at? L: My website has my main portfolio, available original works, and a store, you can find that here I’m also on Instagram, where I post most of my updates. I’ve been doing art on just about every set since.ĭ: For those of us who love your work, where can we find more of your artwork (outside of your Magic pieces)? Lucas: Thank you! I’ve been working on MtG since 2010.
